Mounties Fall to No. 8 OSU

STILLWATER, Okla. (January 16, 2015) – Jake A. Smith claimed a 3-1 decision at 197 as the No. 23 West Virginia University wrestling team dropped a 35-3 Big 12 dual to No. 8 Oklahoma State at Gallagher-Iba Arena on Friday evening.

The loss drops the Mountaineers, who recently moved into the national rankings, to 6-6 on the season and 0-1 in Big 12 action.

Smith scored the lone win of the day for West Virginia, recording his 20th victory of the season with the decision over Luke Bean. Smith registered a late first period takedown, then started off the second with an escape to take a 3-0 lead. Bean got on the board with a third period escape, but couldn’t score again as Smith earned the win.

No. 4 Eddie Klimara scored a 10-2 major decision over Zeke Moisey, scoring seven third-period points in the win. Gary Wayne Harding then took a 9-2 decision from Cory Stainbrook at 133 pounds. Stainbrook scored escapes in the first and third periods as the Mountaineers trailed the Cowboys 7-0.

No. 10 Michael Morales put up a fight at 141 pounds, but ultimately dropped an 8-5 decision to No. 19 Dean Heil. Heil registered a trio of first period takedowns, though Morales countered with a pair of escapes to end the first period with a score of 6-2 in favor of Heil. Morales recorded an escape to start the second and the two finished out the period scoreless with Heil up 6-3. Heil escaped to start the third before a takedown from Morales made it 7-5. However, a final escape from Heil made it 8-5 with Oklahoma State leading 10-0.

No. 4 Josh Kindig pinned Louis Colonna at 149 pounds as OSU took a 16-0 advantage. After keeping it close through two period, Brutus Scheffel lost a 17-7 major decision to No. 19 Anthony Collica. Scheffel escaped from a Collica takedown in the first to enter the second trailing 2-1.

Defending National Champion No. 1 Alex Dieringer pinned Ross Renzi at 165 late in the first period, giving the Cowboys a 26-0 lead. Parker VonEgidy fought a tough battle for the Mountaineers at 174, dropping a 3-2 decision to No. 18 Jordan Rogers. Rogers scored first with a takedown, with VonEgidy claiming an escape. VonEgidy scored an escape in the second to tie the score, but Rogers took the lead in the third with an escape to stretch the OSU advantage to 3-2.

Bubba Scheffel battled with No. 15 Nolan Boyd before ultimately dropping a 10-5 decision. Scheffel scored on a reversal in the first, though Boyd led 3-2. Boyd added an escape and a takedown in the second to take a 6-2 lead before Scheffel registered an escape and a takedown in the third to make it 6-5. Boyd scored an escape and a takedown before tacking on the riding time point to take the 10-5 decision.

Smith got the Mountaineers on the board at 197, trailing 32-3, as they entered the heavyweight bout. No. 5 Austin Marsden took an 8-2 decision from A.J. Vizcarrondo as the Cowboys won the match 35-3.

The Mountaineers will travel to Norman on Sunday for a 3 p.m. ET dual at Oklahoma in McCasland Field House.
