WVU Defeats Binghamton, Harvard
PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Jan. 14, 2017) – The West Virginia University wrestling team went 2-1 at the Pitt Duals on Saturday at Fitzgerald Field House in Pittsburgh, defeating Binghamton (22-20) and Harvard (32-9) while suffering a setback to Rider (28-6).
The Mountaineers’ (2-8) win over Binghamton in its first match of the day marked the program’s 600th all-time win.
No. 6 Jacob A. Smith (197) led the team with a 3-0 mark, while Devin Brown posted a pair of tech. falls at 125 pounds on his way to a 2-1 showing. Cory Stainbrook (133), No. 8/12 Dylan Cottrell (165) and Dayton Garrett (157) each won by fall, with Cottrell adding a tech. fall as he also went 2-1 at the tournament.
“I’m proud of our men with two wins today!” said WVU coach Sammie Henson. “We are improving and it has been challenging. But today, with Devin (Brown) starting us off strong, I believe our men continue to feed off his energy. Our freshman Dayton (Garrett) had a great win as well today. It was a total team effort.”
At 125, Brown used a pair of takedowns and 12 nearfall points in winning an 18-0 tech. fall over Binghamton’s Steve Bulzomi in the third period as WVU took a 5-0 lead. Stainbrook picked up his second consecutive first-period pin at 133 pounds, putting Ian Lupole to the mat just over 90 seconds into the bout for an 11-0 Mountaineer lead. Joe Wheeling (141) added a 5-2 decision over Dylan Caruana to make it 14-0 in favor of WVU.
The Bearcats claimed wins by decision at 149 and by tech. fall at 157 cut WVU’s lead to three at 13-8 before Cottrell got the Mountaineers back on track with a 19-2 tech. fall of Jake Einbinder in the second period as WVU claimed a 19-10. Binghamton took bonus-point victories at both 174 and 184 pounds before Smith won a 6-1 decision over Mark Tracy at 197 to put West Virginia on top, 22-17 entering the final bout. The Bearcats won by decision at heavyweight as the Mountaineers picked up the 22-20 team victory.
Rider took a 10-0 lead after starting the second dual with wins a 125, 133 and 141 (major decision). Christian Monserrat won a 3-2 decision over Jesse Rodgers on riding time to put WVU on the board down 10-3. The Broncs claimed the next four bouts for 25-3 advantage heading into the 197-pound match. Smith used a third-period escape and takedown on his way to a 5-4 win over No. 14 Ryan Wolfe to add three more points for the Mountaineers, who trailed the Broncs 25-6. Rider won a decision at heavyweight in taking the 28-6 match win.
Brown once again got the Mountaineers off to hot start against Harvard, winning a 17-0 tech. fall in the second period of his 125-pound bout against Matthew Rodriguez. Stainbrook won a 2-1 decision over Jeff Ott at 133 for his second win of the day as WVU took an 8-0 lead over Harvard. The Crimson got on the board with a win by decision at 141, cutting the Mountaineer lead to five at 8-5. Monserrat took a 7-3 decision from Colby Knight at 149 to make it 11-3 in favor of West Virginia.
Garrett pinned Zeth Dean in the first period for his first-ever collegiate bonus-point win at 157, while Cottrell followed that with a second-period pin of Peter Bearse as the Mountaineers claimed a 23-3 advantage. Harvard won by decision at 174, but Parker VonEgidy struck back with a 6-3 decision over Kanon Dean to make it 26-6. Smith won by forfeit for a 32-6 lead before the Crimson claimed the heavyweight bout by decision as West Virginia came away with the 32-9 team win.
The Mountaineers travel to Oklahoma next week to start Big 12 action. They take on No. 1 Oklahoma State on Friday in Stillwater in an 8 p.m. match before facing No. 15 Oklahoma on Sunday in Norman at 1 p.m. ET.
