Team Captains Named

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Oct. 26, 2016) – West Virginia University wrestling coach Sammie Henson announced on Wednesday that seniors Dylan Cottrell, Tony DeAngelo and Cory Stainbrook will serve as team captains for the 2016-17 season.

“We are excited to have Dylan, Tony and Cory as our captains this year,” said Henson, who enters his third season with the Mountaineers. “These three epitomize what it means to be a Mountaineers. They’ll lead our team with dedication and determination to excel at the highest level.

Cottrell, who will wrestle at 165 this season, transferred to WVU from Appalachian State in January of 2015. The Spencer, West Virginia, native took third at 157 pounds at last season’s Big 12 Championship and is a two-time NCAA qualifier. Cottrell posted a 30-9 mark as a junior and enters the season ranked at No. 15 in his weight class.

Hailing from Mebane, North Carolina, DeAngelo enters his third season in Morgantown after transferring from Missouri in the summer of 2014. He registered 18 wins at 141 pounds, taking fifth at the 2016 Big 12 Championship in March and seventh at the Southern Scuffle

Stainbrook enters his fifth year at WVU. The Streetsboro, Ohio, native qualified for the 2014 NCAA Championships at 125 pounds after placing third at the Big 12 Championship that season. He moved up to 133 pounds for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 season, compiling 20 wins. Stainbrook will drop down to 125 pounds this season.

West Virginia opens the season on Sunday, Nov. 6, when the team hosts the Mountaineer Quad at the WVU Coliseum. The Mountaineers will face Campbell and Ohio starting at 10 a.m.
