Monserrat, Cottrell Lead WVU at Mountaineer Quad
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Nov. 6, 2016) – Christian Monserrat posted a pair of bonus-point victories as the West Virginia University wrestling team suffered a pair of setbacks in the season-opening Mountaineer Quad at the WVU Coliseum on Sunday. The Mountaineers fell to Campbell, 29-17, and suffered a 25-11 loss to Ohio.
“It’s a process,” said WVU coach Sammie Henson. “We have to continue to build on the things we have done well today and worker hard and smarter to address our weaknesses. We had some bright spots with our top work today. We just need to close out matches.
Monserrat had a pin against Campbell before adding a major decision against Ohio. Cory Stainbrook added another win my fall versus the Camels, while No. 15 Dylan Cottrell went 2-0 with a major decision in the tilt with the Bobcats.
After the Camels picked up a pin at 125 for a 6-0 lead, Cory Stainbrook picked up a third-period fall over Campbell’s Jonathan Ryan at 133 pounds. Stainbrook used an early takedown and four nearfall points for a 6-0 lead at the end of the first. He chose to start the second in the defensive position, quickly escaping to make it 7-0 entering the third. Starting on top, Stainbrook turned Ryan for the pin to tie the score 6-6.
Tony DeAngelo earned a 6-2 decision over Lucas Stewart at 141. A first-period takedown gave DeAngelo the 2-1 lead before he added an escape and another takedown in the second to make it 5-1 through five minutes of action. DeAngelo started on to and gave up an escape, but took the point for riding time at the end to push the Mountaineers in front, 9-6.
In his first career dual match start at 149, Monserrrat had an early takedown to gain control of his match against Lucas Stewart. He quickly put Stewart’s back to the mat for the pin with 19 seconds reaming in the first period as WVU took a 15-6 advantage.
Campbell earned a win by fall at 157 before Cottrell won a 5-2 decision over Quentin Perez at 165 to give the Mountaineers’ lead to 18-12. The Camels tacked on three more points with a win at 184 pounds to come within three at 18-15.
No. 9/10 Jacob A. Smith was leading Campbell’s Willie Bevins 9-3 in the third before he was called for a flagrant misconduct and ejected from the Quad. Bevins won by disqualification and WVU was assessed a one-point penalty as the Camels took a 24-17 lead. They then added a tech. fall at heavyweight for the 29-17 win.
Ohio won the first three bouts, using a major decision and a pair of decisions to take a 10-0 lead before Monserrat put the Mountaineers on the board at 149. A first-period takedown gave him the 2-0 lead over Cullen Cummings before he added an escape and another takedown to make it 5-0 heading into the third. Monserrat went for two twice more in the third, adding on riding time for a 10-2 major decision as WVU trailed Ohio 10-4.
The Bobcats won at 157 to push their lead to 13-4. Cottrell got WVU back on track at 165. After a scoreless first period, Cottrell scored a takedown on No. 17/19 Austin Reese in the second then turned him twice for a total of eight nearfall points. Leading 10-0 entering the third, he added two more takedowns as well as riding time, just missing the tech. fall but taking a 15-1 major decision.
Ohio took a 16-8 lead with a win by decision at 174. Parker VonEgidy add three more for the Mountaineers, winning a 9-6 decision over Hunter Yeargan to bring the Mountaineers within five, down 16-11. However, WVU was forced to forfeit at 197 and dropped a decision at heavyweight as Ohio claimed the 25-11 victory.
West Virginia heads to Troy, New York, next Sunday for the Journeymen ASICS Collegiate Open at Hudson Valley Community College.
