WVU Duo Retains National Ranking

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Dec. 6, 2016) – A pair of West Virginia University wrestlers remain nationally ranked at their respective weights, as Dylan Cottrell (165) and Jacob A. Smith (197) are both in the top-20 in the latest rankings released on Tuesday

After going 4-2 for a fourth-place finish at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational last weekend, Smith currently ranks at No. 6 according to InterMat after ranking seventh by the publication last week. He stays at No. 8 in FloWrestling’s rankings and moves from No. 10 to No. 9 in rankings released by The Open Mat. Smith defeated No. 16 Tom Sleigh of Bucknell and No. 15 Ricky Robertson of Wisconsin while dropping a 6-4 decision in sudden victory to No. 2 Jared Haught of Parkersburg.

Cottrell remains at No. 8 in InterMat’s rankings and No. 9 in FloWrestling’s rankings. He moves up two spots from No. 7 to No. 5 in rankings by The Open Mat. The senior from Spencer, West Virginia, has missed the previous two competitions with a minor injury.

The Mountaineers will take on rival No. 23 Pitt on Sunday in a 2 p.m. match at Fitzgerald Field House in Pittsburgh.
