Mountaineers Drop Match to Mustangs
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (Jan. 3, 2017) – No. 6/7 Dylan Cottrell and Devin Brown each scored bonus points as the West Virginia University wrestling team fell to Cal Poly, 19-18, on Tuesday at Mott Athletics Center in San Luis Obispo.
Coaching legend Joe Seay joined WVU coach Sammie Henson and his staff on the bench as an honorary coach. Seay, the U.S. Olympic Team coach at the 1996 games, led CSU Bakersfield and Oklahoma State to a combined nine national titles and held several coaching positions with U.S.A. Wrestling.
After missing the previous four events with an injury, Cottrell made his return to the mat at 165 and picked up a 19-4 tech. fall over Cal Poly’s Luke Wilson. After taking a 6-0 lead on a takedown and nearfall points in the first, he added a takedown and an escape in the second before scoring 10 points in the third to claim the tech. fall with 30 seconds remaining.
Brown started things off with a major decision at 125, putting the Mountaineers on top 4-0. Facing David Gonzalez, Brown scored a first-period takedown and turned Gonzalez for four nearfall points to take a 6-0 lead in the first. He added an escape in the second, yielding a takedown to Gonzalez but keeping a 7-2 lead after five minutes of action. Brown added two more takedowns in the third period before tacking on a point for riding time in taking the 12-3 major decision.
Cory Stainbrook added three more points for WVU with a win by decision over Yoshi Funakoshi at 133. Stainbrook used a trio of takedowns on his way to an 8-4 win as West Virginia took a 7-0 lead over Cal Poly.
The Mustangs won by fall at 141 to come within one before Christian Monserrat put the Mountaineers back on track with a win by decision at 149 pounds over Joshy Cortez. Monserrat claimed a first-period takedown before adding a pair of nearfall points in the second. He added an escape and the advantage time point in the third for a 6-1 decision and a 10-6 WVU lead. Cal Poly won by major decision at 157 to tie the match, 10-10.
After Cottrell’s tech. fall put the Mountaineers back on top, 15-10, the Mustangs came away with a pair of decisions at 174 and 184 to claim a 16-15 advantage. Jacob A. Smith scored a pair of takedowns on his way to an 8-3 decision over JT Goodwin at 197 pounds to put the Mountaineers ahead once again, 18-16. However, the Mustangs took a 1-0 decision at heavyweight to win the match 19-18.
West Virginia travels to Bakersfield on Wednesday for a 9 p.m. ET dual with the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners at the Icardo Center.
