WVU Falls at No. 1 Oklahoma State

STILLWATER, Okla. (Jan. 20, 2016) – No. 6 Jacob A. Smith claimed a win at 197 pounds as the West Virginia University wrestling team fell in Big 12 action at No. 1 Oklahoma State, 38-3, in Stillwater on Friday evening.

“We battled tonight,” said WVU coach Sammie Henson. “We fought as a team.”

Smith won a 2-1 decision over Derek White for the Mountaineers (2-9). After a scoreless first period, Smith opted for the defensive position in the second, scoring an escape for a 1-0 lead. He was twice called for stalling, giving up a point to White to tie the score 1-1. However, Smith rode white through the period to take the victory on riding time and put three points on the board for WVU.

OSU’s Nick Piccininni tech. falled Devin Brown at 125 as the Cowboys took a 5-0 over the Mountaineers to start. Cory Stainbrook scored a late takedown, but dropped an 11-5 decision to No. 2 Kaid Brock at 133 pounds to give OSU an 8-0 lead after two bouts.

Joe Wheeling suffered a 14-4 setback to No. 1 Dean Heil at 141 pounds as the Cowboys used the major decision to take a 12-0 lead in the dual. At 149, Christian Monserrat also added a late takedown following an escape in the third, but couldn’t recover from an early deficit as he dropped a 13-5 major decision to No. 2 Anthony Collica.

Dayton Garrett fought a tough battle at 157, but dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 6 Joseph Smith. Wrestling in his home state, Garrett wrestled Smith through a scoreless first period. Smith claimed a 1-0 lead on an escape in the second, and neither wrestler scored in the period. Opting for a neutral start in the third, a takedown in the last 30 seconds of the period would pad Smith’s lead as he took the 3-0 win to give OSU a 19-0 lead.

No. 8/10 Dylan Cottrell dropped a close one at 165, suffering a 6-4 loss at the hands of No. 6 Chandler Rogers. Rogers scored first, taking a 2-0 lead into the second period. He added an escape in the second as Cottrell trailed 3-0 entering the third. Rogers was called for a technical violation after locking hands, giving Cottrell the point as he trailed 3-1. Rogers added a pair of nearfall points before Cottrell escaped to trail 5-2. Cottrell scored a takedown to come with one, but Rogers countered with a late takedown of his own as Cottrell dropped the 6-4 decision.

Ty Millward fell at 174, and Kyle Rogers lost a tech. fall at 184 before Smith put the Mountaineers on the board, down 38-3. OSU won another tech. fall over Brandon Ngati at heavyweight to take the 38-3 team win.
