Mountaineers Complete Their Run at Nationals

March 21-23, 2019

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Four members of the West Virginia University wrestling team fell in their respective consolation brackets to complete their runs at the 2019 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships held at PPG Paints Arena, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Friday afternoon.

Redshirt sophomore Matthew Schmitt, who is a two-time NCAA qualifier, finished his run at this year's national tournament with a hard-fought 4-3 loss to No. 31-seed Mason Pengilly of Stanford in his first round of wrestle-backs at 133 pounds. The Platte City, Missouri, native took a 2-1 lead into the second stanza following a first-period takedown. Pengilly chose to start on bottom, using a reversal to put the score in his favor at 3-2. However, Schmitt quickly escaped to knot the match at 3-3 heading into the final frame. Schmitt then started the third in the defensive position, but couldn't get up on his feet, as Pengilly rode him through the period to add on the riding time point for the 4-3 victory.

After picking up a first-round major decision over CSU Bakersfield's Sean Nickell, Schmitt suffered a 9-3 setback to top-seeded Daton Fix of Oklahoma State in the second round of the championship bracket. He ends his second season in a Mountaineer singlet with an 18-8 overall mark. Of note, Schmitt holds a 3-4 record at the national tournament.

At 149 pounds, redshirt senior Christian Monserrat capped his collegiate career with a 9-3 loss to No. 15-seed Max Thomsen of Northern Iowa in his second round of wrestle-backs. Monserrat's weekend was highlighted by a 7-3 decision over No. 33-seed Malik Amine of Michigan, as he picked up his 70th career victory in a Mountaineer singlet. The Methuen, Massachusetts, native ends his final season with a team-best 24 wins and is 70-43 in his five-year career at WVU.

Sophomore Nick Kiussis dropped a 14-6 major decision to No. 14-seed Jesse Dellavecchia of Rider in his second round of wrestle-backs at 165 pounds. The Brunswick, Ohio, native claimed his first NCAA Tournament victory over No. 20-seed Tyler Marinelli of Gardner Webb on Thursday, but could not maneuver his way through the consolation bracket on Friday, capping his sophomore season with a 19-12 overall mark.

At 197 pounds, redshirt freshman Noah Adams wrapped up his first season in a Mountaineer singlet with 19 victories. The Coal City, West Virginia, native capped his first-ever NCAA appearance with a 7-2 setback to No. 14-seed Eric Schultz of Nebraska in his second round of wrestle-backs. Of note, Adams' lone victory of the tournament came against No. 29-seed Brandon Whitman of North Carolina on Thursday evening.

Junior Brandon Ngati also competed at this year's event, finishing his run in the first-round of 285 lb wrestle-backs on Thursday. With five Mountaineers competing, West Virginia boasts 184 national qualifiers since 1979 when the NCAA implemented the current qualification system.
